Club Events & Projects
The Rotary Club of Bangor Breakfast provides members with a variety of opportunities to give back to the community. Your committee work, or day-of project can also count as a meeting make-up to help you achieve the Club’s 50% attendance policy. Choose one that interests you. Volunteering for a Rotary Club of Bangor Breakfast project event is a great way to connect with your fellow members—and your community.

All That Jazz High School Band Competition – March
Four bands or choral groups from the Greater Bangor area compete—and win—just for participating in this annual event. Each high school receives $1,000 for their performance. The night of the competition, the audience votes for their favorite school band by turning in one of the four tabs that come with each ticket. Schools can sell tickets in advance of the performance to secure votes from their fans. The high school group with the most votes wins another $1,000. Finally, a panel of judges selects the best performance of the night, and that high school wins $1,000. The club’s prize money provides much-needed and appreciated money for high school music programs. The All That Jazz committee solicits schools to participate, sponsor prize money, and program ads. Members can also work on performance night, selling audience tickets and counting votes.

Rotary Interact Club – School year youth leadership project with the Bangor YMCA
The Breakfast Rotary Club supports the next generation of community leaders with the Bangor Y/Rotary Interact Club for high school students. This partnership with the Bangor YMCA builds on their longtime, successful Leadership Camp and extends it throughout the school year. “Interactors” discover fun, meaningful service activities while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends. Club members attend Interact meetings to share their professional and Rotary experiences, and the teenagers attend many breakfast meetings throughout the year to share progress on projects and recruit membership participation in them. High school students meet weekly at the Bangor Y, working with an advisor on the local and international projects they choose to support. BABRC members can attend an Interact meeting to share their own stories of Rotary and volunteering as well as to offer advice on the students’ project. Attendance at a weekly Interact Club meeting also counts as a “make-up” meeting to help members maintain attendance.

Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast – November
Each Veterans Day, the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary Club heats up the griddles and flips hundreds of pancakes. The club serves between 400 and 600 hearty breakfasts, and veterans eat for free. Money raised is used to purchase new coats for the Salvation Army which are donated through the WLBZ 2 Coats for Kids drive. That new winter outer-wear for infants, children, and adults goes into holiday gifts for needy area families. Members who work on this committee secure breakfast supplies, cook, serve, and staff the event. We have more fun shopping for the new coats in late November and delivering them during the WLBZ 2 Coats for Kids Day live broadcast the first Saturday in December.

Holiday Auction and Dinner – December
The Club pulls out all the stops for this annual event that raises money for scholarships at Eastern Maine Community College and an area non-profit selected each year. Auction items range from vacation destinations, specialty dinners and desserts whipped up by club chefs to tickets for sporting events, concerts and plays—and many, many items in between. Members can participate in a variety of ways: donating an auction item, working  on the Auction Committee that secures other items and sponsors, buying tickets—or a table—and also volunteer for set-up and night-of help. The Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary Club is a long-time supporter of EMCC, donating thousands of dollars each year for student scholarships. The recipients talk to the Club each year about their education challenges and successes; it’s one of our most popular meetings!

Salvation Army Bell Ringing – December
Ho, ho, ho! Wear your warmest clothes and flex those fingers. BABRC members sign up in pairs for one-hour shifts staffing the Salvation Army kettle, starting early and wrapping up more than eight hours later. We help the Salvation Army raise  hundreds of dollars in a single day each year. It’s a feel-good project that does good, too.
